WALK

Community Path: Across the region and country the re-creation of abandoned railroads as bike and pedestrian paths has successfully connected communities and restored neighborhoods. The City of Somerville has been actively pursuing the continued development of the Somerville Community Path, which will connect Belmont, Arlington, Somerville, Cambridge and Boston, with an uninterrupted, off-road facility. The path now extends from Grove Street to Cedar Street in Somerville, complementing the Alewife Linear Park stretching from Davis Square west to Alewife MBTA Station in Cambridge. The next planned phases in Somerville include extensions from Cedar Street to Lowell Street, section alongside the Green Line Extension from Lowell Street to the Inner Belt area of Somerville (planning and design occurring in conjunction with the Green Line Extension), and eventually to NorthPoint in Cambridge. The City will continue to work on extending the Path to create additional open space, access, and improve public infrastructure for the community.

Walking
Cambridge is a great city for walkers. It is compact and flat, it is well served by public transportation, and its mix of housing, stores, services, work places and parks means that many destinations are within easy walking distance.

Useful Numbers for Pedestrians and Cyclists

Bicycles and Pedestrians: Under Mayor Curtatone's leadership, the City of Somerville has placed a great emphasis on the importance of infrastructure that supports and encourages bicycle and pedestrian mobility. Programs such as Shape Up Somerville and Safe-START, as well as numerous bicycle lane additions and streetscape improvement projects are a few of the steps Somerville is taking toward promoting safe, healthy, and sustainable transportation.
